The reserve covers 760 square kilometers of land, ranging from 60 meters in the Gangetic Plains to 1750 meters at the Himalayan border.
Established in 1983 as India's fifteenth tiger reserve, Buxa expanded in 1991 with an additional 54 square kilometers before becoming a national park in 1997.
The sacred Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple within the reserve draws more than 10000 devotees during the Shiva Chouturdoshi festival.
Visitors can reach the reserve from Alipurduar Junction railway station 17 kilometers away or from Bagdogra airport at a distance of 195 kilometers.
The reserve supports 284 bird species, 73 mammal species and maintains the highest number of fish species in North Bengal.
